Antique Chinese Wine Table

This classical Ming style wine table, crafted circa 1800, retains much of its original dark lacquer. The top of the table also reveals some of the original stain finish, (without the lacquer covering) stained to resemble the look of tieli mu; which was often sought after. There is also a cinnabar lacquer spill which has not been removed due to its historic presence.

Both the simple straight apron and the head spandrels, in the form of a Chinese cloud motif, have a beaded outline. The spandrels are not carved flat, but slightly convex—another detail of older furniture. The splayed rounded legs are supported with front and side stretchers, giving the appearance of strength and stability, qualities esteemed by the Chinese.
