Antique Japanese Tansu Chest of Drawers
Meiji period antique Japanese stacked chests of drawers with ebonized finish. This tansu (dansu) is from the Sendai region of Japan. The upper chest has three drawers, the lower chest has two small drawers behind a locked door (with key) and two large drawers. The shape of the decorative black iron hardware on the drawer handles mimics the chrysanthemum. Additional iron work on edges and corners. The chests have larger handles which allowed carrying with a pole and for securing the bottom chest to the upper chest. The upper chest has two additional handles on each side. From Wikipedia: "Sendai-dansu (tansu) are chests used to store kimono and clothing. They originated from craftsmen in the Sendai region, and are often made of zelkova wood with drawers lined in cedar. Sendai-dansu are characterized by one long top drawer, with three slightly smaller drawers underneath. There is usually a lockable door containing two smaller drawers. Sendai-dansu are known for their elaborate ironwork - commissioned from former sword makers after the Samurai were disbanded in the Meiji era."
