Antique Chinese Powder Blue Porcelain Jar Decorated with Gilt Phoenix
Antique Qing Dynasty powder blue porcelain jar with baluster body and domed finialed cover. Decorated with gilt (gold) phoenix roundels. To achieve this signature blue glaze finish, potters used a bamboo tube covered with silk gauze and blew ground cobalt through it onto the moist transparent glaze. After firing at a high-temperature, they added the gilt designs. This type of Chinese monochrome was very popular in Europe where it was copied successfully in England at the Worcester and Bow porcelain factories around 1760. This jar has rubbing in the mellow colored gilt as is indicative of normal use. Price is for each but can be sold as a matched set with #NE1101 for $2500.
