Antique Painted Asian Box With Carved Handle and Two-Part Lid -Sold
Intriguing rectangular box with two-piece lid and handle. The exterior was lavishly painted with scenes over a red lacquer with black and gold borders in geometric shapes. The scenes that remain are of a blue and gold fruit bowl (peaches perhaps?) on one end and the other end scrolls bound with ribbon. On one of the sides, a hand fan with ribbons and a scepter of some sort, and on the other side possibly a butterfly and stylized clouds. The two-piece lid lifts off to reveal a subdivided interior with aged remnants of lacquer. The architectural handle has the remains of its formerly lacquered and painted finish and has a carved, humpbacked arch with each end supported with uprights that have a bull nose and notching shaping the finials and they run to the base of the box.
The Chinese designed an elaborate array of wooden and woven baskets, boxes, and buckets to carry and store things. Some were styled around specific uses--picnics, carrying fish, rice, or water. Some were used for special occasions like carrying "sweets" to a wedding party or a Chinese New Year celebration.
Today, many seem whimsical but always make a great accessory. Use them to hold your keys and mail, magazines, and hand-towels.
