Furniture: Carved Chinese Temple Doors with Sliding PanelsExquisitely Carved Temple Doors - A Rare FindThese doors are reported to originate from a Chinese temple. The doors are impressive in size but are decorated with intricate carvings. The main carved area is of a Chinese geometric pattern. Mortise and tendoned into the lattice pattern are eleven different small carvings of flowers, vases, butterflies and dragons--some of which repeat in the pattern. The top four carved panels are similar--two "Good Fortune" bats with wings spread surrounding a Chinese "Longevity" symbol. The four carved panels below the main lattice area are each different and depict birds nesting and resting in tree limbs. The bottom panels are plain. The most fascinating feature of these carved temple doors is that they both have sliding wooden panels in the rear to close off the top carved section. The sliding panels are each held in place when lifted by a wooden movable peg. The panels have the remains of paint or stains that suggest the outline of the carved section. They are currently joined together at the center with a modern hinge but the outer edges have the iron hooks from the original door hinges. Use these antique temple doors as entrance doors or keep them joined in the center to use as a room divider.
