Set of 6 Door Panels with Carved Flying Bats
SOLD. Very unique panels. This set of six panels was originally designed as a partition in the main hall of a prominent dwelling. Instead of the shiny red lacquer found later in the Qing Dynasty, crushed cinnabar was used for the deep red hue on these panels. The mineral has faded over time and much of the elm wood is now visible. The upper portion of the panels is carved in a continual life or dragon’s eye (hui wen
) pattern. Notice the extra beading detail on each raised edge. The five flying bats found through the pierced carving symbolize the Five Blessings: prosperity, longevity, health, virtue, and a natural death. The bats are outlined in a red gold – another example that this set of panels was commissioned for someone important in the community. The subtle, low relief carving in the middle of each shutter is another version of the scrolling dragons. Ms Hessler bought these panels eight years ago for her own home, and has not seen anything like them in over five years. Silk Road Collection is proud to offer this antique treasure from the private collection of Kimberly Hessler, noted Chinese furniture expert and author.
