Home design should also follow this concept. Position and layout your home and windows to work with natural sunlight—like breakfast rooms and bathing areas to face eastward.
High activity spaces, like kitchens, should receive abundant and balanced sunlight from at least two sides or from skylights above--this reduces glare.
In higher density neighborhoods, where sunlight from windows is scarce, use skylights and transoms to capture natural light.
Here in New Orleans we must also design out the summertime light and heat. Use screens, shutters, porches and plant trees on the west side of your house.
But remember, a sunny room still needs artificial lighting to balance sunlight and shadows as the sun moves.
