When I was younger, I was convinced that those chipmunks, Chip and Dale, both made furniture and were dancers. Well now, I am a bit more informed.
Chippendale furniture refers to the Englishman Mr. Thomas Chippendale (1740-1799). He and his family became famous for both cabinet making and furniture making.
His inspirations came from English, French and Chinese furniture designs, but his genius was his ability to wed these different styles.
His favorite wood was mahogany; which he lacquered, gilded and occasionally veneered.
The Chippendale style often features intricate carvings, generous scale with a dominating solid wood structure and open back chairs with straight legs. This style contributes to a sense of formality and masculinity.
