Oriental Home Furnishings, from China, Small Chest with Lacquered and Painted SceneLovely early 20th century Chinese chestSOLDThe front depicts small groups of people relaxing and talking in a garden setting. The top depicts an intricate scene of a water garden with a warrior approaching a noble who is guarded by two soldiers. The noble is seated at a low table with a calligraphy poem hanging behind him. The top scene is bracketed at one end by a dragon and at the other end by a phoenix. The dragon and phoenix were depictions of the emperor and empress. The ends depict stylized chrysanthemums and the back has iris flowers. The chest has black lacquer overall which is then over-painted with these charming scenes. There are two shallow drawers and two small doors. Originally, this may have been a "lady's chest" - used by a woman for the safekeeping of her jewelry and other personal effects. The inside dimensions of the drawers are 9.25"(23.5cm) wide by 7.5"(19cm) deep by 1.25"(3cm) high. The inside of the bottom is 10"(25.5cm) deep from front to back.
