Antique Winnowing Basket from the Philippines

This winnowing basket from the Philippines is in very good condition, with it s very sturdy and tight weaving and rattan base and round lip trim. At two of the ends are woven handles, which allows the basket to be hung from a peg. Wind winnowing is an agricultural method developed by ancient cultures for separating grain from chaff and insects. It takes place after the process of threshing; which is the process of separation of grain or seeds from the husks and straw, Winnowing, in its simplest form involves throwing the mixture into the air so that the wind blows away the lighter chaff, while the heavier grains fall back down for recovery. The basket has a lovely patina, ranging from dark brown at the edges to a golden brown nearer to the center. The basket today would look lovely on a kitchen wall as art or placed at the center of a large table or buffet as a center piece.
